Mez Breeze

Since the 1990’s Mez Breeze has created digital works, books, award-winning digital literature, games, and other genre-defying output (all while teaching/mentoring, archiving, and supporting digital art and writing). Mez’s recent awards include ‘Inanimate Alice: Perpetual Nomads’ winning the inaugural 2020 Woollahra Digital Literary Award Readers’ Choice Prize, while ‘V[R]ignettes’ won the QUT Digital Literature Award as part of the 2019 Queensland Literary Awards. In 2019, Mez also received the Marjorie C. Luesebrink Career Achievement Award which:“…honors a visionary artist and/or scholar who has brought excellence to the field of electronic literature.”

Dayforth
Dayforth is a Twine-based Electronic Literature work that unfolds in microchapters. Dayforth is interval-driven, and is technically not an interactive fiction but is instead an 'interactive' fiction that hinges on 'intra' meaning 'within'. Think: the concept of interactive fiction reworked, or weirded, so that the reader is teased with a standard CYOA choice-based story, where they find themselves stuck in looping intervals where (after making a narrative choice by selecting option a, b, or c) the only way to move through the microchapter is to go back and select another option. Each Interval/chapter appears to show a choice-based pathing system where a reader gets to choose their interpretation of an event or action; however, on making the choice, they are immediately directed back to the start of the Interval where the only other choices available are the alternative responses to their initial choice. This deliberate looping of the narrative in short chapters forces the reader to concurrently follow all three narrative pathways (and have to hold these pathways as viable narrative options in their minds) rather than make a choice that dictates a solo, or linear, plot. To make things even more weird, the third of the narrative choice-strands available to the reader in Dayforth (through option ‘c’) is created in Mezangelle, a type of code-inflected poetic creole that injects insertions into the very fabric of words to create multiple meaning-sets. This third option reworks the ‘a’ and ‘b’ options to offer a more imaginative and poetic interpretation that shifts the meaning of the work towards a more surreal leaning, and which ultimately story-stitches together the meaning of the foam, the floodwater, the railway crossing and the symbolic importance of all three.
